Nowadays more people are moving themselves away from natural sugar to artificial sweeteners. Whether it be a coffee shop, a restaurant or at home, the use of natural sugar is decreasing day by day as the use and consumption of artificial sweeteners is increasing all over the world. Artificial sweeteners are labelled as “diet-friendly” over natural sugar, but in reality it is more harmful.
According to a recent study conducted by York University in Toronto, aspartame (which is a type of artificial sugar), is the most harmful type specially for those who are overweight. In this research, 2800 American adults participated and were asked what they had in the last 24 hours. It is proven that those who had natural sugar (like glucos or fructose) digested the food more easily as compared to those who consumed more of artificial sweeteners (like aspartame or saccharin).
It is confirmed that the artificial sweeteners are not helpful for human bodies and because they cannot be digested rapidly as compared to natural sweet, it is declared to be more harmful specially for overweight people. The researchers further added to this research on the side effects or negative effects of having natural sugar, or artificial sweeteners: “The notion that it is calories, as opposed to sugar, that may be leading to obesity and increased diabetes risk.”
Why Artificial Sweeteners Are Even Used?
A sugar substitute is a food additive that provides a sweet taste like that of sugar while containing significantly less food energy than other sweeteners, making it a zero-calorie or low-calorie sweetener. Some sugar substitutes are produced naturally, and some synthetically. It is supposed to be more healthy and better for diabetic patients or even health conscious people, but it is a better option to opt for natural sugar rather than artificial sugar or sweeteners!
