Karachi Traders Refuse to Pay Inflated Electricity Bills

Traders gathered at Bolton Market to voice their discontent, expressing concerns about the recent surge in inflation impacting their businesses.

President of Karachi Electronic Dealers Association (KEDA), Mohammad Rizwan Irfan, highlights the financial challenges faced by businesses and citizens due to increasing costs.

Sharjeel Goplani, Chairman of All City Traders Union (ACTU), condemns the 200% rise in electricity bills and announces refusal to pay the inflated charges.

National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) approved a significant base tariff increase in response to the federal government’s request.

The tariff hikes, effective from July 1, 2023, sparked concerns among consumers about the rising cost of living.

While lifeline consumers and those using up to 200 units are exempted, higher usage brackets see substantial tariff escalations.

For consumption up to 100 units, the tariff increased by Rs3, reaching Rs16.48 per unit.

Consumption between 101 to 200 units incurs a Rs4 increase, resulting in a tariff of Rs22.95 per unit.

Similarly, users consuming 201 to 300 units face a Rs5 hike, leading to a tariff of Rs27.14 per unit.

For consumption between 301 to 400 units, the tariff increases by Rs6.5, reaching Rs32.03 per unit.

Consumption between 401 to 500 units witnesses a significant Rs7.5 increase, making the tariff Rs35.24 per unit.

The traders’ protest reflects widespread concerns about the impact of rising utility costs on citizens’ livelihoods and the overall economy. The demand for reasonable and affordable utility bills remains a pressing issue, calling for government action to address the situation.

In addition, the traders have announced plans to hold a protest in Saddar Karachi on August 23 to further voice their grievances and demand action.
