The World Health Organization (WHO) has launched the WHO Civil Society Commission, aimed at strengthening the role of civil society organizations (CSOs) in advancing global health initiatives. This initiative will provide a structured platform for CSOs to offer advice and recommendations to WHO on health priorities and related matters.
The Commission’s mission includes enhancing dialogue and collaboration between CSOs and WHO at global, regional, and national levels, with a focus on achieving universal health coverage and the Sustainable Development Goals. It responds to calls from civil society for more meaningful engagement with WHO beyond existing avenues.
The Steering Committee, comprising 22 diverse CSOs, will guide the Commission’s strategic direction and develop key deliverables. It will also facilitate communication between civil society and senior WHO leadership.
Over 350 organizations applied to join the Commission, with 120 accepted initially. The application process remains open for organizations interested in participating in this historic collaboration.
Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, stressed the importance of listening to and engaging with the communities served, emphasizing that the Commission’s formation allows WHO to learn from and be guided by the ideas and insights of civil society.
The Commission represents a significant step in strengthening partnerships and harnessing the collective efforts of CSOs to address global health challenges and contribute to WHO’s organizational priorities.
