A faster, smoother railway journey between Lahore and Rawalpindi is finally in sight. The Ministry of Railways has announced plans to increase train speeds on this major route to 160 km/h, bringing the total travel time down to just two hours.

The upgrade is part of a wider push to modernize the country’s railway system, improve passenger convenience, and bring it closer in line with international standards.

Speaking at a recent media briefing, Railway Minister Hanif Abbasi shared a number of major developments in the pipeline, including an international freight service from Lahore all the way to the Iranian border, with future plans to extend toward Russia and build links with Kazakhstan.

On the domestic front, Pakistan Railways has reported record revenue of Rs. 83 billion in the current fiscal year. Over 1,400 newwagons are under construction, including 500 specifically for freight services. A new Lahore–Narowal route is also set to launch on June 15, while Eid passengers can look forward to five special trains and a 20% discount on fares.

On the domestic front

In parallel, efforts are underway to improve services for railway staff and their families, with plans to outsource 8 hospitals and 14 schools currently managed by Pakistan Railways. The Royal Palm Express project has also moved into its next phase following international tendering.

With these changes, the Ministry hopes to create a faster, more connected railway

system, one that’s equipped for both local travel and international trade.
