Nestled in Gilgit-Baltistan’s breathtaking landscape, Skardu shines in aviation history as Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) achieves a remarkable milestone on the country’s 76th Independence Day. Skardu airport’s historic international debut celebrated the touchdown of its inaugural international flight from Dubai on August 14, 2023.

This historic achievement was preluded by Gilgit-Baltistan’s Chief Secretary, Mohyuddin Ahmed Wani. Designating August 14 as the day for Skardu’s maiden international flight from Dubai.

This inaugural flight marks the beginning of a new era in connectivity. PIA is all set to initiate a weekly flight schedule following this Skardu airport’s historic international debut. The Dubai-Skardu route will commence on Saturday, August 19.The Skardu to Dubai route will kick off on Tuesday, August 22.

Ensuring seamless travel for passengers, PIA’s spokesperson emphasized that the debut Dubai-Skardu flight will eventually extend its journey to the capital city, Islamabad, offering convenient onward travel options for travelers and enhancing tourism.

Skardu Airport plays a pivotal role in achieving this milestone, serving as the sole airport in northern Pakistan capable of handling larger aircraft. Its runways make it a crucial hub for long-distance flights, given the shorter runways at Gilgit and Chitral airports.

Former Prime Minister Imran Khan elevated Skardu Airport to the status of an ‘international’ facility. However, the lack of a dedicated refueling facility for international flights hindered the airport’s untapped potential.
