In a move aimed at empowering citizens and making public transport greener, the Sindh government is all set to roll out a game-changing electric vehicle (EV) program in the upcoming fiscal year.
Two major initiatives stand out:
– Free electric scooters for women
– E-taxis on easy installments for unemployed youth
The plan was finalized during a recent strategy session led by Sindh’s Transport Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, with senior officials from the transport department, Sindh Mass Transit Authority (SMTA), and TransKarachi in attendance.

Female students, working professionals, and women entrepreneurs will soon have the chance to own electric scooters free of cost. The selection will be done via a balloting process, ensuring transparency and equal access.

To help first-time riders gain confidence, the government will also provide riding lessons across Sindh, led by female instructors—a much-needed addition for safety and comfort.
Unemployed youth won’t be left behind. The province plans to offer EV taxis through installment plans, in partnership with banks. These will be affordable, interest-friendly options designed to help young drivers not just earn a livelihood, but eventually own the vehicle outright.

It’s a step towards sustainable income, reduced emissions, and less reliance on fossil fuels.
EV adoption in Pakistan is slowly picking up speed, and provincial-level programs like this one have the potential to fast-track that shift. At the same time, they address key social goals:
- Women’s mobility and safety
- Youth employment
- Eco-friendly urban transport
Sindh is signaling that the future of transport doesn’t just belong to the rich, it should be accessible, electric, and empowering.
