Elizabeth Holmes, founder of Theranos and now disgraced, has already seen a reduction in her prison sentence. Holmes reported to a Texas women’s prison camp at the end of May to begin her 11-year sentence after the guilty verdict. However, updated prison records now indicate that the number of years to be served has been reduced to 9.

Holmes appealed her conviction in December, citing misconduct by her lawyer during the trial. Her legal team argued that she should be allowed to stay out of prison while they work on the appeal, but this request has been denied. Despite being in prison, Holmes can continue to fight her conviction through the appeals process.

The Bureau of Prisons recently updated Holmes’s projected release date, indicating a reduction in her sentence by almost two years. The reasons for the change are unclear, but release projections can be influenced by factors such as jail-time credit, completion of treatment programs, and good behavior. Sunny Balwani, Holmes’s former business partner, has also seen a reduction in his 13-year sentence by two years.

In addition to her prison sentence, Holmes has been ordered to pay restitution to the amount of $452 million to her investors. Her co-defendant, Balwani, will also be held jointly liable for the sum. However, Holmes’s legal team claims she may not be able to meet her financial obligations due to limited resources.

Before her trial, Holmes lived a luxurious lifestyle on a large estate in Silicon Valley with her husband and two children. Despite her conviction, her family will be allowed to visit her in prison every weekend. It remains uncertain how much of her sentence Holmes will ultimately serve, as early release for good behavior and participation in prison programs is common at the facility where she is incarcerated.
