Karachi drivers are finally getting a break. The Sindh government has officially scrapped all parking fees on public roads across the city. The decision, now backed by a formal notification, puts an end to charges that citizens were routinely paying in all 25 towns of Karachi.

From now on, parking fees will only apply in clearly designated spots, such as council-owned plots, parking plazas, or approved commercial areas. The order directs Town Municipal Corporations to stop fee collection immediately and warns of strict action against any individual or group attempting to collect unauthorized charges.

This move follows direct instructions from Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and builds on an earlier policy that removed parking charges from Karachi Metropolitan Corporation-controlled roads. The latest decision now extends that relief citywide.

Only the KMC is authorized to apply parking charges, and only in pre- approved areas. All other entities, official or otherwise, are barred from charging the public for parking anywhere else.

Mayor Murtaza Wahab called the move a necessary step in protecting citizens from unjust fees, adding that institutions found violating the order will face legal consequences. Local commissioners have been tasked with full enforcement.

For the people of Karachi, especially daily commuters, it’s a rare and welcome moment of urban relief.
