Fierce storms sweep Saudi Arabia’s Makkah region, disrupting daily life and halting pilgrimages to the Grand Mosque. Lightning strikes the iconic Fairmont Makkah Clock Royal Tower hotel as gale force winds of over 80 km per hour lash the area. No casualties reported during the storm, contrasting with the deadly 2015 incident that claimed lives at the Grand Mosque. Abu Mayyada, a resident, recounts his experience of the sudden darkness and chaos on the streets.

The National Centre for Meteorology’s spokesperson, Hussein al-Qahtani, notes the storm’s similarity to the 2015 crane collapse at the Grand Mosque. Pilgrims attempting to circle the Kaaba are knocked off balance by strong winds, as barriers skid on rain-soaked floors. The Makkah neighbourhood of Al-Kakkiyah receives 45 millimetres of rain within 24 hours. Locals describe scenes of panic and instability as gusts of wind sweep the area.

Makkah resident Mohammed reflects on the terrifying ordeal, emphasizing the abruptness of the storm’s arrival. Yusuf adds that while August typically brings winds, this storm was exceptionally intense. Flash flooding subsides by Wednesday morning, restoring some normalcy. Despite the disruption, the storm lacks the devastating impact of the 2015 incident. Residents share their experiences while maintaining anonymity due to concerns.

Flood In Makkah

The storm’s intensity highlights the unpredictable nature of weather patterns in the region. While flash flooding and strong winds cause disruptions, the damage is relatively contained. The Grand Mosque and the iconic Kaaba remain intact, a relief considering the events of 2015. As Saudi Arabia continues to experience varying weather conditions, the resilience of its residents shines through in their ability to cope and recover.
