Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota, aged 28, tragically died in a car accident near Zamora, northwestern Spain, on July 3, 2025, alongside his 26-year-old brother André Silva. According to the Spanish Civil Guard, their Lamborghini veered off the A‑52 highway (likely due to a tyre blowout) then burst into flames, with both brothers reportedly killed on the spot.

Jota rose to prominence at Paços de Ferreira and Atlético Madrid before breaking out at Wolves and signing with Liverpool in September 2020. Across 182 appearances for Liverpool, he scored 65 goals and contributed significantly to their 2024–25 Premier League title win. He also earned 49 caps for Portugal, winning the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025.

Liverpool FC released a statement calling the news “devastating” and requested privacy for the family. Cristiano Ronaldo said on social media: “It doesn’t make sense. We were just together in the national team… you’d only just got married.” The Portuguese Prime Minister and UEFA pledged minute’s silence in his honour during upcoming matches.

Jota had tied the knot with long-term partner Rute Cardoso just two weeks earlier and leaves behind three young children. His brother, an aspiring footballer for Penafiel, perished in the crash as well.

In their hometown of Porto and at Anfield, fans laid flowers and observed moments of silence as the football community mourned the sudden loss of one of its brightest talents.

Diogo Jota’s death, so soon after winning a Premier League crown and getting married, shocked fans worldwide. He leaves behind a legacy of skill, determination, and infectious positivity, cut tragically short at age 28.
